My mom's best friend had known her since they were 3 years old. Aunt P had her parents die within 6 months of each other before I was 10 years old.
I wrote my mother's obituary in 2016 and spoke at her funeral. With my siblings' full agreement, I described my aunt as my mom's adopted sister in those. That Aunt P was recognized as the only sibling of an otherwise only child, brought her to tears. She's ALSO been a Great Aunt (both meanings meant) to our kids, who don't otherwise have a grandparent on our side.
Unfortunately, since losing Mom, our father has not even wanted to see his own offspring much. We remind him too much of Mom. So, Great Aunt P is the only grandparent generation shared by our kids.
I'm glad of the good news, and may the memories be a blessing for the sad news.
